The Joy Hanlon Memorial Award
In 1995, Quincy Youth Soccer established a Memorial Fund, in memory of Joy Hanlon. Joy was an active participant in QYS until her tragic death in 1992, at the age of nine. In establishing the fund, Quincy Youth Soccer wished to honor Joy’s memory, her competitive spirit and her love of soccer.
Beginning that year, Quincy Youth Soccer honored two high school seniors who had been active participants in the league and were continuing their education past high school. The Award Fund was started with the proceeds of the President’s City Soccer Tournament. In addition, one dollar from each player registration is placed into the fund each year. Other fundraising activities during the year may generate income, which can be added to the Memorial Fund, at the discretion of the Board of Directors. The fund has grown to the point that, as of now, four awards are given annually. To date, more than $24,000 has been awarded to 62 recipients.
Requirements: Any Quincy Youth Soccer player, who is a graduating senior and who has played a minimum of eight seasons is eligible. For eligibility, fall and spring seasons are counted separately. Applicants do not have to be current QYS or high school players to be eligible.
Additional criteria such as volunteer service to the league through coaching or clinics, as well as refereeing, are considered. Community service, not related to soccer, is also considered.
Applicants will be considered by members of the awards committee and notified of the award in May. The committee is made up of the Committee Chairperson; Mr. Rich Hanlon, QYS President, QYS Treasurer, an additional QYS board member and a member of the community.
Applications are distributed to local highs schools in the spring. Additionally, applications may be obtained by writing to the QYS Board of Directors, P.O. BOX 69-2209, Quincy MA 02269.
